On average, during the summer, we swim about 5 times a week. In the past, for the half-hour or so prior to those swim sessions I would scour the house from one bedroom and bathroom to the next collecting all of our pool gear. Swim suits and cover-ups were located in each of our 4 different bedrooms, beach towels were scattered amongst 2 different bathrooms and sometimes in the laundry room, Kaiah's swim diapers were in my closet (with most of her clothes), while Cam's were in her closet. It was probably pretty comical watching me race from room to room gathering (or forgetting to gather!) all the necessities. Add to that another 1/2 hour of my time after everything had been washed, dried, and folded just to put it all away.
Then one day last week, in a fleeting moment of intelligence, I said to myself, "Self, what if you put everything swim related in one place? Come on, genius, work smarter not harder." I don't always listen to myself, but this time I was sounding pretty smart. After a little brainstorming I decided that our teeny-tiny linen closet in the upstairs hallway, outside of the laundry room, was the perfect place. Easy access, ya know.
Prior to the switch this was a total waste of space. Our one-bajillion towels for all of our overnight guests were kept there. Oh, wait. We don't have any overnight guests. Never have, probably never will (sleepovers excluded). That's the great thing about having all of your family live within a 5 mile radius of your house. So, a couple towels got relocated to the kids' bathroom (our munchkins each rotate between 2 towels seen here), some to our bathroom, and the rest to storage. Hand towels and wash cloths are now confined to a basket, while all my wrapping supplies are organized and have been moved to the top shelf in the laundry room.
We're about a week into this arrangement and it's working really well. It's nice to only spend 5 minutes prepping for a trip to the pool, rather than 30.
